Clinicians Ceremony Student and Coater Information

Dress code

Students are expected to arrive with their lab coats. Please make sure your lab coats are neatly pressed or dry cleaned beforehand. On the day of the ceremony, you can either carry your coat or have it on a hanger (which you can store underneath your seat or with your guests).  We recommend that you don’t wear your coat that morning, in order to avoid wrinkling.

The dress code is professional/interview attire.  Also, please do not wear suit coats, blazers or jackets underneath your coat. Wear light clothing and comfortable footwear. As a safety precaution, spiked or high-heeled shoes are not recommended. The stairs leading onto the stage are quite steep.

Entry and seating

Students must be in their seats 30 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony.

Students (and Coater, if applicable) will enter the theater through the Main Entrance on Brooklyn Street.

Students will then be directed to the Main Floor center section of the theatre where you will be seated alphabetically.

Guests (other than your Coater) are not allowed in the student/coater seating area.

All personal belongings should be given to family members prior to entering the theatre.  Corsages, purses, cameras, and flowers cannot be carried onto the stage.

Coating Procession

When we reach the coating part of the Ceremony, our staff will direct you, row by row, to the left side of the theatre and then to the backstage waiting area.

As you wait, you will remain in alphabetical order, with your coat unbuttoned and draped over your arm to avoid wrinkling.   When your name is announced, you will walk to the stage and stand on the marked spot.  Students will pass their coat to their physician coater or one of the SOM Deans, they will take your coat and place it on you.  Please remain in place for a brief picture, and then continue walking across the stage.

Students are required to remain for the entire ceremony.

Additional information for Physician Coaters

Coaters can be a parent, relative or mentor and they must have an M.D. or D.O. degree. (No exceptions)

One physician coater per student is allowed, unless you have multiple family members that are WSU Medical Alumni.

If you have a physician coater, he/she will be seated right next to you, and you will both process to the stage.

Coaters are encouraged to wear his/her physician’s white coat.
